The U.S. Navy is holding a meeting in Honolulu this weekend to gather feedback on its plan to continue underwater training activities that involve sonar and explosives in the waters around Hawaii and California.

The meeting will be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Keꞌehi Lagoon Memorial at 2685 N. Nimitz Highway.

It’s an opportunity for the public to hear more details about the Navy’s proposal to extend training for five years after 2018, and suggest what the Navy should prioritize in its environmental analysis.

The Navy recently settled a lawsuit with environmental organizations and agreed to limit its use of sonar and explosives underwater in the waters around Hawaii and California.

The settlement came after a federal judge in Honolulu ruled that the National Marine Fisheries Service violated federal law in issuing a permit to the U.S. Navy for such training.

Online comments will also be accepted until January 12. Click here to submit a comment or check out the Navy’s website for more information.
