Carol Fukunaga, is a first term member of the Honolulu City Council representing District 6. Her district includes downtown Honolulu, Punchbowl, Liliha, Pauoa, Nuuanu, Papakolea, Kalihi and parts of Makiki.

She won her candidacy for the seat in a special election that coincided with the 2012 general election. The District 6 seat was vacated in August 2012 by U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who left her post early to run for Congress.

Fifteen candidates joined Fukunaga on the District 6 ballot. Fukunaga beat runner-up Sam Aiona, the race’s leading anti-rail hopeful, 25 percent to 21 percent. Fukunaga generally supported moving forward with the Honolulu rail project.

Prior to her election to the City Council, Fukunaga had since 1992 represented the Makiki, Ala Moana and McCully communities as a Democrat in the state Senate. She was chair of the committee on Economic Development and Technology. She also was a member of the committees on Water and Land and Ways and Means.

Fakunaga lost her bid for re-election to her seat in the State Legislature after redistricting pitted her against fellow incumbent Democrat Brian Taniguchi. Fukunaga also served in the state House between 1978 and 1982 and from 1986 to 1992.

She was born in 1947 and received her degree from the University of Hawaii Richardson School of Law.
