Rep. Gene Ward, a Republican, is the House Minority Leader in the Hawaii Legislature.
Ward represents Kalama Valley and Hawaii Kai. He replaced Rep. Lynn Finnegan, who ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in the November 2010 general election.
Ward attended Defiance College in Ohio for two years before attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he eventually obtained a Ph.D. in Sociology of Business.
He has served in the House from 1990 through 1998 and was Minority Leader from 1993-1997. He founded the Legislature’s Small Business Caucus with former Rep. David Stegmaier.
Ward has served on the Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board and has worked as Senior Democracy Advisor, Peace Corps Country Director and as a Small Business Development Specialist. He also served as a translator-interpreter in the Vietnam War.
Ward is married and has a daughter.
