The mayor of the City and County of Honolulu is elected every four years and can be elected to office for no more than two consecutive full terms.

Anyone who is registered to vote on Oahu and over the age of 30 is eligible to run for mayor.

As the chief executive officer of the city, the mayor has direct supervision over agencies listed in the Revised Charter of the City and County of Honolulu and other agencies he or she considers “desirable.” The mayor is also responsible for monitoring all administrative activities, making sure that they are honest, effective and lawfully conducted.

He or she may also appoint staff when funding has been made available by the City Council.

The mayor can also make temporary employee transfers between department or subdivisons of departments and recommend a pay plan for all employees within the Executive Branch to the City Council.

He or she may create or terminate executive branch positions and make monthly reports on these actions.

The mayor also has a duty to make annual and periodic reports for the public informing it of city policies, programs and operations, is allowed to veto City Council passed bills and has a voice, but no vote in the proceedings of boards created by the Charter or ordinances.

The City Council also provides a contingency fund for the mayor to be used for public purposes that the mayor considers proper.

Kirk Caldwell has been mayor since 2013
