U.S. Rep. Mark Takai represented Hawaii’s 1st Congressional District, which includes the southern portion of Oahu and most of the island’s population.
He died of pancreatic cancer on July 20, 2016.

Takai was elected to Congress in 2014, emerging from a seven-candidate field in the Democratic primary and then defeating Republican Charles Djou in the general election.

He took office Jan. 3, 2015, replacing Colleen Hanabusa, who gave up the seat in an unsuccessful bid to move to the U.S. Senate in 2014.

While in office Takai has made veterans issues and the U.S. military top concerns. He is a member of the House Committee on Armed Services.

He served in the state House of Representatives for 20 years, from the 34th District from 1994 to 2012, and the 33rd District from 2012 to 2014.

Takai was a lieutenant colonel in the Hawaii Army National Guard and took part in Operation Iraqi Freedom, serving in Kuwait from February to September 2009.

Mark Takai was born July 1, 1967, in Honolulu, and graduated from Pearl City High School in 1985. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1990 and a master’s degree in 1993, both from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

An Episcopalian, he maintained a residence in Aiea with his wife, Sami, and two children, Matthew and Kaila.
