A Legislative conference committee is meeting today to discuss final steps in passing a bill that would release money from the state Hurricane Fund to the department of education to help end Furlough Fridays. All bills that will have an impact on the state’s budget must be finalized by midnight today.
Only one small problem: The legislators have no idea how much money they’re supposed to be releasing. The board and union asked for $92 million to restore school days while Gov. Linda Lingle, who holds the purse strings, counter-offered with a $62 million plan that would return only “essential workers” to school on scheduled furlough days. Ever since, there’s been no movement.
