Freelance writer Lindsey Hoshaw is on board a 72-foot sailboat traveling from Tokyo to Maui in search of the million-ton debris field created by last year’s tsunami. The 13-passenger crew is made up of scientists, ocean conservationists and documentarians (including journalists like Lindsey). They’ll be taking samples to check for radioactivity among other scientific studies.

The trip was delayed while they waited out a typhoon but the ship set sail on June 7. She is filing occasional blog posts as her satellite communications device allows and you can read them here.

Better yet, Lindsey is writing a piece for Civil Beat (and other media outlets) about the adventure. So watch for something in about three weeks when she makes landfall in Hawaii.
