The University of Hawaii has won a crucial permit to build a giant telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea. Excerpts from Pacific Business News:

The Hawaii Board of Land and Natural Resourceson Friday granted the University of Hawaii at Hiloa conservation district use permit for the $1.3 billion Thirty Meter Telescope, saying the university can add what will be one of the world’s largest telescopes to the observatories on the summit of Mauna Kea.

The board, in a final decision in acontested-case hearing, said the university had satisfied all eight criteria necessary under state law to allow the telescope to be built on conservation land.
