Earth, like Hawaii, is an isolated place surrounded by emptiness. And these just-released photos from NASA show just how isolated Hawaii is in the universe.
The photos were taken by NASA Astronaut Rex J. Walheim during STS-122 Atlantis, a NASA Space Shuttle Mission to the International Space Station that launched in February 2008.
These were just given to the Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems, or PISCES, a Hawaii state government aerospace agency in Hilo. PISCES Executive Director, Rob Kelso, a former NASA Shuttle Flight Director who has 25 missions under his belt, said these are some of the best photos he’s ever seen from any flight.
Walheim was the keynote speaker at the 2014 Hawaii Astronaut Ellison Onizuka Science Day, which was on Jan. 25 at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
The above photo is of all the Hawaiian Islands. See if you can name the islands below.
