David Armstrong

David Armstrong is a deputy editor at Honolulu Civil Beat. He was formerly the executive editor of The Georgia News Lab, an award-winning investigative reporting collaborative.

Armstrong is a veteran investigative reporter and editor. He was the founding director of The News Enterprise, an investigative reporting project at Emory University and served for seven years as bureau chief of the National Security News Service in Washington, D.C. He was previously the editor of the Texas Observer.

Armstrong has won multiple Project Censored awards for his coverage of important but under-reported stories. In 2016, the Association of Opinion Journalists named Armstrong the winner of the Barry Bingham Sr. Award in recognition of “outstanding efforts to encourage minority students in the field of journalism.”

That same year, the Atlanta Press Club awarded Armstrong its highest honor, the Impact Award. In 2017, the club named Armstrong and the News Lab the winners of its award for News Innovation.

Armstrong is also the principal author of the book, “America and the Islamic Bomb: the deadly compromise,” an investigation of global nuclear trafficking networks.
