After storm water runoff damaged part of a bridge on Hana Highway, the county is urging residents to take the route through Paia, Haiku and Keanae to East Maui.

Kukuiula Bridge at Mile Marker 39.5 on Hana Highway is expected to undergo repairs for at least two months, according to a county news release. Consultants discovered the damage earlier this week during a routine bridge inspection, according to the county.

Last month, there was a deluge of rainfall in the area, which also closed parts of Piilani Highway.

That means for now, there isn’t through traffic from Hana to Kula, according to the county.

“The Department of Public Works appreciates the public’s patience and understanding while bridge repairs are ongoing,” the county news release says.
