Maui County road crews are still working to clear and repair part of Piilani Highway after a rainstorm slammed East Maui earlier this week, causing landslides to block the road.

Anyone who wants to travel to Hana should continue taking the highway through Paia and Haiku, rather than the road that stretches south of Haleakala.

As of late Wednesday, 1.5 miles of the highway still remained closed between mile marker 35.5 in Kaupo to mile marker 37 in Kipahulu, according to a county news release. Earlier this week, landslides covered sections of roadway spanning from mile marker 19 to 39.

“Crews are working diligently,” Mayor Michael Victorino said in a news release. “But there is significant road damage, and repairs will take time.”
