Sam Slom

Sen. Sam Slom is a Republican in the Hawaii Senate, where he is the minority leader.
He represents Hawaii’s 8th District, which includes Hawaii Kai, Aina Haina, Kahala and Diamond Head.

As of the 2010 election, Slom is the only Republican serving in the 25-member state Senate. As such, he currently serves on all 14 Senate committees, including Ways and Means and Judiciary and Labor.

Slom is originally from Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in economics and government in 1963. He also earned a Bachelor of Law degree in 1966 from LaSalle Law School in Chicago.

Slom worked as an economist for the Bank of Hawaii from 1968 through 1982, according to a biography on his website. As a self-proclaimed taxpayers’ advocate — he claims never to have voted for a tax hike — Slom was also a columnist for many Hawaii publications and produced radio shows, including KHVH “Viewpoints” and KGMB’s “Voices of Concern,” among others.

In addition to representing East Honolulu, Slom is the president of Smart Business Hawaii, which provides advocacy for Hawaii’s small businesses. He is also a private consulting economist and president of SMS Consultants.

Slom has four children and has been active in AYSO soccer as well as Hawaii Kai Youth Baseball.
