Mufi Hannemann lost every House district on Oahu and only won four of 51 statewide, a Civil Beat analysis shows.

Neil Abercrombie‘s victory over Hannemann in the Democratic primary for Hawaii governor was a blowout, with the former congressman winning by nearly 22 percent.

Civil Beat’s analysis of 242 precinct reports and 109 separate sets of absentee ballot data1 shows that he won two on Kauai and two on Maui.

House Districts in Wailuku and Kahului on Maui and Lihue and Waimea on Kauai were Hannemann country — he actually triumphed in Kauai county [pdf] by 19 votes. That’s a margin of one-tenth of 1 percent.

That means all 35 Oahu House districts — areas comprised of those voters that presumably know the two candidates best — went for Abercrombie. Abercrombie represented urban Honolulu in Congress for 20 years and Hannemann served as Honolulu mayor for six.

The race was considerably tighter in one area that could be called Hannemann’s home turf. In Aiea, where the Hannemanns list a residence, House District 33 was only 53 to 46 in Abercrombie’s favor.

Hannemann grew up in Kalihi and, amid the recent property tax flap, identified it during a debate as his “hometown.” That did not prevent House District 30, which contains Kalihi Valley and the surrounding area, from backing Abercrombie 62 to 37 percent.

Abercrombie’s hometown, Manoa, was strongly in favor of him, 66 to 33 percent. But Abercrombie’s strongest base of support, at least in terms of percent margin of victory in the Democratic primary, was District 50, in Kailua and Kaneohe, where he triumphed 72 percent to 26 percent, almost tripling Hannemann’s output.

The area is a Republican stronghold, making it less likely that voters would cross over to vote for Hannemann. In fact, GOP governor hopeful James “Duke” Aiona narrowly outpolled Hannemann in District 50 even as he finished with less than half of Hannemann’s votes statewide.

  1. Absentee ballots are not counted in the precinct where the voter lives. The final election results break down the absentee votes, which Civil Beat had to add back into the district totals.
