Hard to believe it’s been nearly 20 years since then-President Bill Clinton in 1993 signed what’s known as the Apology Bill, a joint resolution that formally acknowledged the United States’ role in the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Along with the many Hawaii-related artifacts displayed in his office, Sen. Daniel Akaka has a framed photo from the day Clinton signed the apology, including the pen he used to sign it.
