Hawaiʻi is a plaintiff in two lawsuits filed by a bloc of 20 Democratic attorneys general on Tuesday to challenge freezes on federal funding by President Donald Trump’s administration.

The lawsuits allege the administration is threatening to make the release of congressionally approved funds to their states conditional on cooperation with federal immigration enforcement actions.

The billions of dollars in funding are intended for roads, highways and other transportation and for state disaster preparedness and response.

The freezes amount to an attempt by the administration to “seize Congress’s power of the purse,” the litigation alleges.

Hawaiʻi is participating in at least 18 lawsuits opposing executive orders and other actions taken by the second Trump administration. Civil Beat is tracking the legal action in a database that will be updated regularly.
