The mayor’s announcement comes a little more than a week after the governor launched a similar effort on the state level.
Honolulu announced plans Wednesday to recruit laid-off federal workers to fill vacant city and county positions.
The announcement from Mayor Rick Blangiardi’s office comes as the Trump administration continues to cut thousands of federal positions. That presents a potential opportunity for Honolulu, which has thousands of openings from engineering to park maintenance and policing.
Like the state of Hawaiʻi, Honolulu says it will streamline hiring for these workers. That includes waiving certain unnamed city hiring requirements for a 12-month period, according to the press release.
“This initiative is a win-win—it provides these workers with meaningful employment opportunities while bolstering our City workforce to better serve the people of O‘ahu,” Blangiardi said in the release. “By streamlining our hiring process, we are taking decisive action to fill essential positions and strengthen the delivery of services that our residents rely on every day.”
