Two state senators have introduced a bill to turn over rebuilding of Lahaina and much of West Maui to the same state agency that brought Honolulu luxury high-rises to Kakaako.

Building the new State Capitol city back to where it used to be. 😄

As I understand it, HCDA’s agenda was to ensure there was a mixture of business, residential, and affordable housing. Kakaako should be their report card as to how well they have done that, especially in the area of affordable housing.

I remember seeing an interview with Archie Kalepa shortly after the initial tragedy where he seemed almost despondent about the future prospects for displaced Lahaina residents. They knew what was about to happen, and I feel kind of naive for not understanding it sooner.
