So interesting. When Campbell Estate was developing geothermal further uprift, Puʻuʻōʻō began 35 years of eruptions, whose pele paved over their proposed well sites. When the 2018 eruption began in Keahialaka, pele went to the edge of the geothermal field and covered one or two wells? But the rest were unharmed, despite a very voluminous river of pele running less than a half mile away. For more than two and a half months. And then, Māori use geothermal. Native Hawaiians would place parcels of food to cook in steaming fissures at Kūkamāhuākea near the summit of Kīlauea.And...???

Big corporate market struggle between entrenched hydrocarbon providers, growing wind & solar companies, and next-gen entrants (incl. geothermal). Cultural approval by mortals speaking on behalf of the divine seem both a PR flourish, and baksheesh in the form of non-technical consultancies to cultural practitioners for their allegiance. Then again: I lived in the mountains with the Aeta tribes ca.1990 when they were excluded from traditional hunting grounds by an exploratory geothermal power project without their consult or consent. They warned that the God of the Mountain would be very angry: in less than a year, Mt. Pinatubo blew up. (Was even reported in Stars & Stripes: still have the clipping somewhere.) Sincerity matters first.

When Kapiolani defied Pele it didn't turn out very well for the Kingdom. I'm definitely not buying municipal bonds any time soon.
