The filing period for Hawaii candidates doesn’t begin until Feb. 1 (and runs until June 7), but at least one legislative contender is already throwing her hat into the ring.

Republican Jaci Agustin announced her candidacy for the Hawaii House of Representatives last week at the Capitol Rotunda.

Agustin, Mrs. Hawaii in 2013, is seeking to represent District 34 (Waimalu, Pearl City, Pacific Palisades).

Her campaign says it has introduced a smart phone app (available on Android and Apple) and plans to add an interactive chat / blog that voters can use to asked the candidate questions.

Agustin lost to incumbent Democrat Gregg Takayama in 2014 by a large margin, 58  percent to 38 percent.

Takayama is a former journalist and press secretary for the U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye and communications director for Lt. Governor Ben Cayetano.

UPDATED: Takayama is running for re-election

“I think Agustin’s Republican agenda is out of step with our Pearl City constituency,” he said.
