There will be a new security point man at the Hawaii state House come January.

Rod Tanonaka will assume the job of sergeant-at-arms Jan. 3, replacing Kevin Kuroda who held the position since 2003.

Kuroda announced his retirement last month to address personal and family concerns.

“Kevin has done an outstanding job and we will miss his steady presence at the Capitol,” House Speaker Joe Souki said in a press release. “We also believe Rod has the experience and skills needed to capably fulfill the requirements of the position.”

Tanonaka previously served as chief of staff for the late U.S. Rep. Mark Takai and prior to that held the same post for U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa during her first term in office.

The sergeant-at-arms duties include providing security for the offices and chambers of the state House.
