Voters to Decide Whether Hawaii Governor Appoints Board of Education

Hawaii lawmakers have passed a constitutional amendment proposal that would mandate an appointed Hawaii State Board of Education. The board is currently elected. The amendment proposal will be put before voters this November.

Both the Hawaii State House of Representatives and Senate passed the bill Tuesday.

Gov. Linda Lingle had originally wanted to abolish the board and give the next governor the authority to make the education superintendent a cabinet-level position. She floated the idea earlier this year during collective bargaining negotiations with the Hawaii State Teachers Association and board of education over Furlough Fridays.
