Possible presidential candidate Donald Trump says he’s sent investigators to Hawaii to look into President Barack Obama’s birth certificate.
“I’m not convinced that he has one,” Trump told Meredith Vieira on the Today Show. “Three weeks ago when I started, I thought he was probably born in this country and now I really have a much bigger doubt than I did before.”
Trump said the president has spent more than $2 million in legal fees avoiding the issue of his birth certificate. He says if Obama can’t prove his American birth, it could go down as one of the greatest cons in the history of politics.
“I have people that actually have been studying it and they cannot believe what they’re finding,” Trump said.
Vieira asked: “You have people now, down there searching in Hawaii?”
“Absolutely,” Trump replied. “And they cannot believe what they’re finding.”
A fellow birther hit a wall on Thursday, after a Hawaii Appeals Court rejected the case [pdf] of a man who had been denied access to Obama’s birth records by the state Department of Health.
FactCheck.org in 2008 examined the original birth certificate and deemed it authentic.
