On Monday, DC808 answered a reader’s question about the “large white object” sitting in the foreground of a photo of Sen. Daniel Akaka sitting at his desk.

We explained that the miniature likeness of the Statue of Freedom — the giant statue that stands atop the U.S. Capitol — has special significance for Akaka. (Read the full post.)

But there’s more to the story. Take a look at that photo one more time:

Turns out that there’s actually another object placed in front of Lady Freedom. You know, that big hunk of what almost looks like coral. From a different vantage point, it’s clear that it’s distinct from the statue. Akaka’s spokesman provided this helpful photograph and the explanation that follows:

The origin of the object on the left may surprise you: It’s a whale eardrum featuring an ornamental etching. Akaka received it as a gift, one that is traditionally bestowed upon leaders, from an Alaska Native leader.

“In traditional times, the Inupiat people of the Arctic believed that whales listen to our every human interaction, and only offer themselves up to worthy and honorable leaders who will feed the community and properly steward its resources,” wrote Akaka spokesman Jesse Broder Van Dyke in an email to DC808. “It is a high honor to receive an eardrum from an Alaska Native, as it is a symbol of their appreciation of a leader’s character.”

It's our job to make sense of it all.
