Last week, Honolulu Budget and Fiscal Services Director Mike Hansen outlined a plan to unload the property, which was bought in the 1970s as part of a never-realized plan to build a regional park in Haleiwa.
Hansen told the Honolulu City Council in a June 13 memo that he wants to have a sealed-bid auction between the adjacent property owners, in this case Anderson and Kamehameha Schools. The starting price would be $300,000.
There’s been some community consternation about who would get the property. Anderson has proposed building an 80-room hotel there, an idea that generated community protests.
Kamehameha Schools, on the other hand would want to use the land as a school bus parking and drop-off site next to Loko Ea Fishpond.
The auction plan has yet to be approved. But on Friday, Honolulu City Council Chairman Ernie Martin floated a resolution that would allow the sale of the land.
