A 60-year-old Kauai Man was bitten by a shark on his foot Wednesday while surfing at the west side surf break known as Pakala’s.

According to Kauai Police Department and DLNR DOCARE reports, today about 1:20 p.m., a 60 year old male, identified by friends only as “Lorrin” from Kalaheo was attacked by a shark while surfing with two friends at a west side surf break known as “Pakala’s”. The male subject was brought to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital by a resident  from the nearby Pakala Camp in his private vehicle. The male sustained injuries to his left foot. The extent of the injuries is unknown at this time. He said he saw the shark biting his food and estimated its size to be 10 foot plus. Lifeguards and DLNR personnel were notified of the incident. 

State DLNR Conservation Enforcement posted shark warning signs on an approximate half-mile stretch of the at the beach.  Per standard protocol the signs will remain up until noon tomorrow.  Officers were on the beach this afternoon to warn the public.  Tomorrow morning officers will return and assess the beach for any shark sighting. If nothing is seen, the signs will come down at noon. 

This is the third reported shark incident on Kauai. A previous shark incident took place on November 4, 2012 at Davidson’s Beach, Kekaha. A surfer’s board was bit, but there was no injury to him.
