The only U.S. senator born in Japan will visit that country next week as part of a national defense-focused congressional delegation (or CODEL, as the folks in D.C. call them).

Senator Mazie K. Hirono, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, will join a bipartisan group that includes Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Representatives Grace Meng (D-NY), Dan Benishek (R-MI) and Terri Sewell (D-AL). China and South Korea are also on the itinerary.

“Each of these three nations plays a key role in the long-term military and economic security of the Asia-Pacific region, and this visit is an opportunity to build critical relationships with international leaders,” Hirono said in a statement.
