The AARP Foundation has set up a relief fund to support victims devastated by Typhoon Haiyan. The foundation will match dollar-for-dollar contributions up to $500,000 which could mean up to $1 million in aid.
AARP notes that among those most severely affected are older residents, including the family members of many Hawaii residents. About 200,000 residents self-identify as Filipino in Hawaii, or 14.5% percent of population.
“This is a devastating time for many Filipinos, including thousands of Hawaii residents who anxiously await news from relatives at home,” said Barbara Kim Stanton, state director of AARP Hawaii, said in a press release.
AARP National President Rob Romasco and former Gov. Ben Cayetano will announce the establishment of the Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund at a press conference later this morning. Other groups supporting relief efforts include the Oahu Filipino Community Council and the Filipino Community Center.
