The state Department of Transportation is putting up concrete barriers to bar parking at Laniakea Beach.

A spokeswoman for the department confirmed Monday that the agency is in the process of blocking off the sandy parking area across the street from the beach, which is used by hundreds of cars on an average day.

The barriers are intended to help keep traffic flowing along the two-lane highway, but many residents have protested the plan, arguing that it will prevent beach access and will endanger pedestrians by forcing beach-goers to park along the road.

The department is currently planning to keep to barriers up just for the month of January. The department considers them to be a short-term answer to the area’s traffic woes as the state deliberates on long-term solutions.
