North Shore residents waived signs on Sunday protesting the state Department of Transportation’s plan to install barriers along the two-lane road by Laniakea Beach.

Civil Beat’s partner KITV reported that state officials hope the barriers will keep traffic flowing by the beach, where cars often are forced to stop or crawl to avoid pedestrians.

Many people park by the road and cross it to swim or see turtles, forcing traffic to a standstill.

Some residents support the state’s plan to block off the parking lot because of the terrible traffic, but many others oppose it and fear losing access to the beach.
