To honor the memory of former state Rep. Faith Evans, Gov. Neil Abercrombie has ordered flags be flown at half-staff today, the day of her memorial services. Evans died Jan. 9 in Kailua at age 76.
“Hawaii is a state with a long history of women pioneers, and Faith stood proudly among them,” Gov. Abercrombie said in a statement. “I value the time we served together in the state Legislature and have great respect for her significant and lasting efforts in honoring and preserving the multiethnic heritage of these islands.”
Born in Honolulu, Evans served in the state House of Representatives from 1974 to 1980 and was the nation’s first female U.S. marshal, according to the governor’s office. Also a registered nurse, she worked at St. Francis Hospital. Evans founded the Puerto Rican Heritage Society in Hawaii and, in 2000, led the Puerto Rican Centennial Commission of Hawaii.
