A film series on journalism hopes to spark community discussion on the future of news and the role of journalists in Hawaii.
The series (event info here) begins tomorrow at 8 p.m. with “Good Night, Good Luck” on Edward R. Murrow, then continues through Thursday and Friday with “A Fragile Trust,” a film on the infamous plagiarist Jayson Blair, and the all-time journalism classic, “All the President’s Men.”
“Deadline” will be at R/D, a coffee shop and work space in Kakaako that recently closed its doors. The shop has partnered with local independent news blog The Offsetter and Interisland Terminal, a nonprofit focused on creating programs to encourage Hawaii’s cultural and socio-economic life.
Each film showing will be followed by panel discussions made up of Hawaii journalists. The roster includes Gene Park of Civil Beat, Elizabeth Kiezkowski of the Honolulu Star Advertiser,Keopulaulani Reelitz of Mana Magazine, Jason Ubay of Hawaii Business, James Cave of the Offsetter, Burt Lum of Hawaii Public Radio, Ikaika Hussey of the Hawaii Independent, Jared Kuroiwa of KHON, and Jackie Perreira of Ka Leo.
