There’s not a single Michelin star in Hawaii, but Da Poke Shack in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii is nō ka ʻoi in America, according to Yelp’s just-released list of the 100 best places to eat in the U.S.
In fact, 10 of the 100 restaurants are in Hawaii, with very good representation outside of Honolulu, and only one high-end restaurant. The other nine restaurants are:
- Sushi Izakaya Gaku
- Ono Seafood
- Opal Thai Food
- Marukame Udon
- Geste Shrimp Truck
- Ono Tacos
- Dat Cajun Guy
- Pono Market
- Sushi Sasabune
From Yelp’s official blog, here’s how they ranked the restaurants:
How’d we make a list so all-encompassing? We dug in to our wealth of rich data to see what the numbers told us about which places Yelpers really love. Engineers on Yelp’s data mining team used a technique based on the Wilson Score to compile a list of highly rated places to eat. This method takes into account both star rating and number of reviews to reveal which spots not only have top notch ratings, but also which are most popular in the Yelp community.
Da Poke Shack boasts an overall five-star rating after being reviewed by 612 people. The reviews are glowing, stating that there’s poke “so fresh they weren’t fishy at all.”
In a short interview with Slate.com, the on-duty manager was caught off guard at the ranking.
When I called the restaurant to ask if they’d heard that they had garnered Yelp.com’s top overall rating, the on-duty manager replied, “Oh, cool. You mean best on our island, right?”
No, I said. Best in the country.
The line went silent for a few moments.
“Oh,” he said again. “Wow.”
How many of these places have you been to?
