How many military personnel are actually in Hawaii in any given year?

It is literally impossible to know, says the state’s Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, since personnel are always on the move. 

Right now, it’s about Army 21,700, Navy 14,600, Marines 7,300 and Air Force 5,200.

And here’s the breakdown from 1953 to 2013 of  military personnel “assigned” to Hawaii:
