The crisis has gotten attention in recent months, with college rape incidents making national headlines and the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights ramping up investigations into the universities and their handling of the incidents. As of April 3, the office had received 30 complaints, according to the Huffington Post.
The federal guidelines, put together by a task force, include recommendations that school administrators conduct anonymous surveys of sexual assault cases and urge universities to keep sexual assault reports confidential.
Victims sometimes choose not to report that they’ve been sexually assaulted because they fear the allegations could be made public.
According to the task force, even though one in five college students has been assaulted, just 12 percent of the attacks are reported.
Several alleged cases of sexual assault at the University of Hawaii have been made public, including a recent incident in February.
