The City & County of Honolulu is investigating possible sick leave abuse by road test examiners, according to a report on Tuesday by Hawaii News Now.

The city already doesn’t have enough examiners to meet the demand for road tests, but the potential sick leave abuse may be making the problem worse. Residents generally need to book a road test appointment at least three months in advance and are forced to wait in line for hours overnight to secure a walk-in road test.

Hawaii News Now reported that although there are 22 full-time examiners, on average just 70 percent show up to work.

“I’m having a problem right now with several of my examiners out on long-term medical leave and several on short-term medical leave, and that gives us staff shortage,” said Sheri Kajiwara, director of the Department of Customer Services.
