The answer is English, but Slate has put together some interesting data on languages used in all 50 states.
If you leave out English and Spanish in Hawaii, for example, the most common language is Tagalog.
It’s not clear whether Slate counted speakers of Hawaiian, which is an official language along with English in the islands. Interestingly, the most commonly spoken Native American language for Hawaii is Navajo.
