A team of astronomers has mapped the supercluster of galaxies that includes the Milky Way and given it the name Laniakea.

That’s Hawaiian for “immeasurable heaven,” according to new study published in Nature.

The supercluster is reported to be 100 times bigger in volume and mass than previously thought.

“A team led by Brent Tully, an astronomer at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, charted the motions of galaxies to infer the gravitational landscape of the local Universe, and redraw its map,” according to the article.

Of note: “Place Names of Hawaii” (Puukui, Elbert and Mookini; UH Press) says Laniakea literally means “wide sky” and is the name of a cave and pool near Hulihee Palace in Kailua-Kona.

The name may have been derived from Raiatea Island in the Society Islands
