Gov. David Ige has announced two key positions in his Cabinet.

Douglas Chin, a local attorney and managing director of the city under former Mayor Peter Carlisle, will be Hawaii’s attorney general. You can read our past profile of Chin as the city managing director here.

Chin has also worked for 12 years at the city Prosecuting Attorney’s office. He will be leaving his post as managing partner at Carlsmith Ball. He’s earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Stanford University, and a law degree from the University of Hawaii.

He is able to defend the state in court, facilitate and negotiate agreements, manage a large department and communicate well,” Ige said in a statement. “It’s rare to find someone who can do all those things.”

Randy Iwase was tapped to be the chairman of the Public Utilities Commission, replacing Hermina Morita who resigned earlier this week.

Iwase is a former supervising deputy attorney general whose division provided legal support for the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and the utilities commission.

He was a longtime state senator, and a former Democratic gubernatorial candidate who lost against former Gov. Linda Lingle in 2006. Iwase earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and his J.D. from the University of San Francisco.

“He has tackled tough issues in the past and has a strong record of commitment to the public,” Ige said in a statement.

Both appointments are subject to state Senate approval.
