The University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine — JABSOM — is ranked in the top 20 of medical schools in the country.
That’s according to a press release Tuesday from the school, which based the ranking on the 2016 “Best U.S. Medical Schools” list complied by U.S. News & World Report.
The rankings report shows JABSOM tied for the No. 19 position along with the University of California—Davis, the University of California—San Diego, the University of Chicago (Pritzker), the University of Pittsburgh and Washington University in St. Louis.

The University of Washington in Seattle is ranked No. 1.
According to JABSOM, “This is the medical school’s best ever showing in the rankings, which are closely watched among the country’s 171 accredited medical schools.”
Gov. David Ige gave a big shout-out to the school:
“Fifty years ago the John A. Burns School of Medicine opened with a vision to provide the best medical education for our community. … Congratulations to Dean Jerris Hedges, the faculty, staff, students and alumni for fulfilling that vision. Primary Care is where doctors are needed most, on the front lines in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, OB-GYN and emergency medicine.”
In a separate ranking, JABSOM is tied for 74th for best medical schools doing research.
