State of Emergency Remains in Force in Micronesia
Damage to islands in Chuuk and Yap is still being assessed in the wake of Typhoon Maysak.
Islands in one of the most remote parts of the planet remain in peril after a killer storm passed through the region last week.
The Micronesia Red Cross said on Monday that a state of emergency remains in effect as the Micronesian states of Chuuk and Yap try to recover from Typhoon Maysak.
As an international aid agency explains, “Getting accurate information has been challenging due to power outages, damaged communications systems and the fact that many islands are only accessible by boat.”

It could take days to find out how extensive the damage was. Several people were reported dead and thousands are said to be displaced from their homes.
In the meantime, the Micronesia Red Cross and other groups are spearheading relief efforts.
About 50,000 people live in Chuuk and more than 11,000 live in Yap.
The storm weakened as it hit the Philippines over Easter Weekend.
