Hawaii law already spells out instances in which owning or possessing a firearm is a no-no.

Some examples:

  • fugitives from justice
  • those convicted of a felony
  • people diagnosed as having significant behavioral, emotional or mental disorders

House Bill 626 proposes to add another reason: prohibiting the “physical possession” of any firearm while consuming or under the influence of an intoxicant.

“Intoxicant” means alcohol or drug.

HB 626, introduced by Democratic Rep. Chris Lee, has a hearing Friday.
