Everyone agrees that it would be better if the nearly 1,400 Hawaii prison system inmates who are housed at a privately run facility in Arizona were instead incarcerated in the islands.

But the solution remains elusive, as you’ll hear in this installment of the Pod Squad.

Civil Beat reporter Rui Kaneya and Managing Editor talk about Kaneya’s recent report in partnership with the Marshall Project about the costs to inmates and their loved ones of being 3,000 miles apart.

Also joining the podcast is Kat Brady of the Community Alliance of Prisons, who has visited the Saguaro Correctional Facility in Arizona and says it is not well-run. She also questioned the assumption that Hawaii needs to continue to incarcerate as many people as it does instead of reforming its justice system as many other states are doing.
