Hawaii health officials reported 89 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, including 73 on Oahu, seven on the Big Island, three on Lanai and one on Kauai. Five Hawaii residents were diagnosed out of state.

Hawaii county officials announced eight new coronavirus related deaths Tuesday afternoon, taking the Big Island’s death toll to 48.

To date, seven of those deaths have been associated with Hilo Medical Center, four occurred at Kona Community Hospital, 10 at Life Care Center of Hilo, and 27 at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home.

The latest deaths are associated with the Life Care Center and Kona Community Hospital but the exact days of death were not yet available, according to Talmadge Magno, Hawaii County Civil Defense administrator.

“It’s not over the last 24 hours,” he said.

Civil Beat calculates at least 236 people have died from the disease in Hawaii including the latest confirmed deaths on Hawaii island that have not been recorded yet by the Department of Health due to medical verification lags. The statewide official death toll remains at 219 and the state’s COVID-19 death rate is 1.45%.

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency launched a new data dashboard Monday that includes the health department’s statistics along with some new details, such as a county-by-county summary of hospital resources. The website also includes information about visitor arrivals, state tax revenues, unemployment claims and bankruptcy filings.

As of Tuesday, 58 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 were hospitalized, including eight in intensive care and five COVID-19 patients on ventilators.

In the last seven days, 1.8% of all COVID-19 tests taken across the state have come back positive — down from a peak of nearly 7% documented in August.

Oahu is currently in Tier 2 of its reopening plan. Lanai is under a stay-at-home order and has recorded at least 103 cases.

A team of experts from the Centers for Disease Control, state Department of Health and Maui Memorial Medical Center are on Lanai to respond to the cases there, Hawaii News Now reported.
