HAWAII VIRUS TRACKER — Jan. 2: 171 New COVID-19 Cases

Health officials reported 171 new COVID-19 cases statewide on Saturday, including 92 on Oahu, 47 in Maui County, 20 on the Big Island, two on Kauai and 10 residents who were diagnosed out of the state.

To date, 21,807 people in Hawaii have been diagnosed with COVID-19, including 1,736 in the past two weeks. Two Maui cases were removed from the official count as a result of updated information.

Nationwide, the number of people confirmed to have COVID-19 rose above 20 million, with 349,521 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Reporting Lag

Civil Beat’s virus tracker is updated when the state releases its daily numbers. The state posts new data daily at noon. The figures include new cases reported on Thursday. Daily reports reflect laboratory results collected up until 11:59 p.m. two days prior, leaving a 36-hour lag between when results are submitted to the Department of Health and when the state reports them publicly.

Authorities have warned there may be a spike in cases following the holidays.

Maui tightened restrictions on gatherings and restaurants beginning on Saturday due to an increase in the number of cases on the island. Gatherings will be limited to five people, down from 10, and bars will have to close by 10 p.m., with a 30% cap on occupancy instead of the previous 50%, according to Hawaii News Now.

Roughly 15% of cases diagnosed in December were associated with travel, with the bulk of cases in Hawaii being spread in the community.

The official state death toll from the virus is 289. Civil Beat calculates at least 294 people have died from the disease in Hawaii, including five deaths on Hawaii island that are still pending medical verification by the state.
