Alden Bunag must also pay $30,000 in restitution and register as a sex offender.
A former Oahu public school teacher was sentenced Tuesday to 17 1/2 years in prison after a U.S. district court judge found him guilty of producing and possessing child pornography.
Alden Bunag, 35, worked at Oahu schools, including Ilima Intermediate and Pearl City High, before his arrest and detainment in June 2022. While working as a middle school teacher in 2017 and 2018, Bunag engaged in sexual activities with a student and shared the video with others, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
At the time of his arrest, Bunag also had thousands of images and videos of child pornography on his phone, the press release said.
Bunag pleaded guilty to the child pornography production offense on May 19, 2023.
In addition to the prison sentence and 15 years of supervised release, Bunag must pay $30,000 in restitution and register as a sex offender.
