Heavy rains Saturday morning caused the Wailua Wastewater Treatment Plant to overflow and spill sewage around Lydgate Beach Park.
Rainfall overwhelmed the sewer system, causing 20,000 gallons of treated waste water to spill out over the course of an hour, according to a press release.
The spill was contained Saturday by 9 a.m., but Kauai County is advising people to stay out of the waters around Lydgate Beach Park on Kauai’s east side.
The state Department of Health was notified of the spill, according to the press release.
Wailua recorded nearly seven inches of rain in the past 24 hours.
