The costs keep climbing and its unclear when Honolulu’s rail line will be up and running, but it still must be decided how much to charge for a trip.

The Honolulu Rate Commission is asking for input and testimony from the public on the future policies and rates for the Honolulu Rail Transit Project once the system begins operations.

Some of the topics to be covered by the commission, according to a press release Thursday, are these:

  • Should single ride fares increase by 25 cents? These rates would apply to both TheBus and Rail.
  • Should a daily cap of $7.50 be set for adult riders (ages 18-64), with a monthly cap of $80, eliminating annual passes for this category?
  • Should a daily cap of $3.75 be set for youth riders (ages 5-17, plus 18-19 if still in high school), with a monthly cap of $40, eliminating annual passes for this category?
  • Should a new category be created as a pilot program for qualified low-income riders? Those under 30% area median income may apply for this category.

Public testimony will be allowed at these Honolulu Rate Commission meetings:

  • Tuesday, March 3, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Kapolei Hale
  • Thursday, March 5, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Kailua District Park community room
  • Tuesday, March 10, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Mission Memorial Building meeting room
