A woman is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Upcountry Maui.

Maui Police said the incident began at about 3:45 p.m. in Pukalani, where an officer encountered a female suspect who was apparently holding a knife.

A police department spokesperson said central dispatch received an abuse report from a residence on Noho Place.

“At approximately 3:54 p.m., officers arrived on scene, where they encountered a female armed with an edged weapon which has since been recovered,” said Maui Police spokesperson Alana Pico.

One officer opened fire, killing the suspect, according to Pico. It’s unclear yet exactly what led to the shooting. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

Pico said no officers were injured.

The incident remains under investigation and no further information is available.

MPD said a formal briefing on the incident will occur next week.
