The Hawaii Sierra Club is set to endorse state Sen. Clayton Hee for lieutenant governor.
A press conference is planned for Sunday morning at Koa Ridge, the site of a controversial development.
Sierra Club said in a media advisory Friday that Hee was the only legislator to intervene as a partner with the Sierra Club to protect prime agriculture land that is in production at Hoopili, a planned 12,500-unit development on 1,500 acres of prime ag land and at Koa Ridge a 5,000-unit development on productive farm land on 500 acres.
Hee and Sierra Club assert in the lawsuit, which is pending before the Hawaii Supreme Court, that the state constitution mandates the protection of prime ag land.
“Hawaii imports more than 90 percent of the food we eat,” Hee said in the release. “This situation is unsustainable for the future of Hawaii and places Hawaii at the mercy of others when conflicts arise such as labor disputes or inclement weather. This situation is not right for the future of Hawaii.
“Sierra Club and I believe the Hawaii Supreme Court will properly interpret the Hawaii Constitution and reverse the Land Use Commission’s approval for 17,500 more homes on farm land that is in production providing jobs and food for the people of Hawaii.”
